O terreno que abriga o Palácio Tangará foi adquirido nos anos 1950 pelo industrial e playboy paulista Francisco “Baby” Pignatari, figura célebre da alta sociedade. Ele planejava construir ali uma mansão para viver ao lado da princesa Ira von Fürstenberg, sua então companheira.

Para o projeto, Baby Pignatari contou com nomes que se tornariam símbolos do modernismo brasileiro: Oscar Niemeyer desenhou a arquitetura da futura residência, enquanto Roberto Burle Marx ficou responsável pelos jardins. A obra da casa nunca foi concluída, mas os jardins de Burle Marx permaneceram como legado, e mais tarde deram origem ao atual Parque Burle Marx, aberto ao público na década de 1990.

Essa herança faz do Palácio Tangará muito mais que um hotel: ele é parte viva da história urbanística, paisagística e cultural de São Paulo.

The residence itself was never completed, but Burle Marx’s tropical landscaping endured.
